The delivery fee is the small part

Free delivery sounds like the whole saving and it is not close. On a Chipotle order placed through a marketplace app, three separate charges sit between the menu and the total: the marked up item price, the delivery fee, and the service fee. Waiving the delivery fee removes one line out of three. The item markup, which nobody sees because it is baked into the price, is usually the largest of the three.

Chipotle sets its own delivery menu above its counter menu at most locations, and marketplaces mark that up again. A chicken entree at $9.79 in store commonly reads around $12.53 inside DoorDash before a single fee is applied. On a $25.00 order the total gap between ordering direct for pickup and ordering through a marketplace runs to roughly $12.50, which dwarfs any delivery code.

Marketplace orders earn no Chipotle Rewards points. At 10 points per dollar, a $25.00 order forfeits 250 points, which is about 15 percent of the way to a free entree. That hidden cost never appears on the receipt.

Real cost comparison

What one chicken entree costs on each channel

Modelled on a single $9.79 chicken entree with typical fee structures. Fees vary by market and by order size, so read the direction rather than the decimal.

Channel Item price Fees Total Points
Pickup on the Chipotle app
The cheapest route by a wide margin and the only one with no fee layer at all
$9.79 None $9.79 Yes
Delivery on the Chipotle app
Delivery menu prices sit above counter prices, then a service fee is added. The delivery fee itself is regularly waived above $10
$11.26 $2.50 $13.76 Yes
DoorDash
Marketplace markup plus delivery and service fees. No Chipotle Rewards points earned
$12.53 $5.50 $18.03 No
Uber Eats
Similar structure to DoorDash. New customer credits discount an already higher base
$12.53 $5.75 $18.28 No

Item prices are national averages with typical channel markups applied. Tip is excluded from every row because it goes to the driver rather than the platform.

How Chipotle free delivery actually works

The mechanism is a threshold rather than a code. Order through the Chipotle app or website, keep the subtotal above $10 before tax, and the delivery fee is regularly waived. On many accounts this happens without any input at all, which is why shoppers report the same code working for one person and doing nothing for another. The code was never the thing applying the discount.

DELIVER and NEW are the two codes reported most often, and both describe the same waiver. If your order already clears $10 and the fee line already reads zero, the code has nothing left to do. If the fee line is not zero, entering one costs nothing and occasionally fixes it. Participation and the exact threshold vary by store, so a location that does not waive at $10 is following its own franchise settings rather than ignoring a code.

The days the fee goes to zero for everyone

National Burrito Day is the reliable one. Chipotle waived delivery fees on all app and website orders for 2 April 2026, alongside the Burrito Vault game that carried more than $2 million in prizes. The date moves with the calendar but the rule does not: National Burrito Day is the first Thursday of April, every year.

Sporting events produce shorter windows. Chipotle has run free delivery around the Super Bowl in February and through March basketball coverage, usually announced two or three days ahead through the app. Cinco de Mayo on 5 May has carried a delivery offer in several recent years. The deals calendar lists each of these against the month it lands in.

When a marketplace is genuinely cheaper

Two cases. The first is a new customer credit large enough to swallow the markup: a $10 off $20 credit on an order that carries roughly $6 of markup and fees still comes out ahead by a few dollars, once. The second is a platform subscription you already pay for, where the delivery and service fees are already covered and only the item markup remains.

Outside those two cases, ordering direct wins on price and earns points at the same time. And pickup wins over both, every time, by the entire fee stack. If the goal is the lowest number on the receipt, a $9.79 entree collected in person after ordering on the app is the floor.

Reading the totals block before you pay

A waived delivery fee does not touch the service fee, the small order fee or the tip. Several delivery promotions read as free delivery on the badge and still land several dollars above a pickup order once those lines are added. Open the totals block, check the fee lines individually, and compare against what the same basket costs for pickup on the same screen. That thirty second check is worth more than every code on this page.

Free Delivery: questions people ask

How do you get free delivery from Chipotle?

Order through the Chipotle app or website and keep the subtotal above $10. The delivery fee is regularly waived at that threshold without any code, and shoppers report DELIVER and NEW applying the same waiver when it is not automatic. Marketplace apps rarely match it.

Is Chipotle cheaper on the app than on DoorDash?

Yes, and the gap is larger than the delivery fee suggests. Marketplace menu prices are set above in store prices, then service fees are added on top, so a $25 direct order commonly lands $5 to $8 higher on a third party app. Marketplace orders also earn no Chipotle Rewards points.

Does free delivery cover the service fee?

No. A waived delivery fee removes one line from the receipt. The service fee, any small order fee and the tip all stay. Read the totals block before confirming, because a $0 delivery fee can still sit above a pickup order by several dollars.

When does Chipotle run free delivery days?

National Burrito Day is the reliable one. Chipotle waived delivery fees on app and website orders for 2 April 2026. Sporting events in February and March bring shorter free delivery windows, usually announced two or three days ahead through the app.
